Less Than 4 Weeks to Go!

Wow, I can't believe how quickly the time has passed, especially given it has been over TWO months since the last post. A pretty sad blog indeed....

The past 6 weeks have been very busy. The company I work for is building a facility in Suzhou, China and I was there for 2 weeks during this past 6 week period. The picture is from a nightly light show at the lake in Suzhou Industrial Park. It is a very interesting city but I did not fair well on the training front. Since I've returned, I have been doing better. This past Memorial day weekend, I managed 50 miles on Saturday, and then another 21 miles Sunday afternoon The training ride was through Silverado Canyon to Lake Forest and back. I was slow, but I made it. The good news is that they recently posted the profile for the 100 mile ride and it looks like the major climb portion is either through Silverado Canyon or through a very similar one. That at least lets me know I can make the climb.

I am trying to ride about 4 times a week for a total of 7 to 8 hours. Hopefully that, along with the cycling I did before the trip to China will get me through. Unfortunately, my weight loss goal is in trouble. I am riding more, but I am also eating more. I'm still hopeful for some weight loss, but time is slip, slip, slipping away.......

March Madness to Sadness

Well, my alma mater made it past the first round but succumbed to Texas in the second round. I still care about the tournament, but... not that much. On to training!

Once again, a reasonable training week. I had five workouts with a mix of aerobic and strength training, with one of the aerobic sessions being a 30 mile bike ride on Sunday. The weather was a little cool and I did get caught in a short interval of rain during my return climb home. I'm still waiting to see the route selection for the June ride, so I'm still hedging my bets and not setting a time goal,... for now.

Unfortunately, my weight loss is moving in the wrong direction and now at 194. So much for last week being a fluctuation. The training is increasing my appetite and I have been a little less than selective for my meal choices. I was hoping it wouldn't come to this, but if this trend continues, the "D" word may be in my future.

Looking back at my few posts, I realized that I had not touched on any meaningful information on cancer research or the Lance Armstrong Foundation. I thought I would start by looking up a few facts on my adversary from years back, Hodgkin's disease. So far, I have not found a published compilation of 2005 statistics. However, the Lukemia and Lymphoma Society does have some interesting information.

Leukemia, Hodgkin and non-Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma are cancers that originate in the bone marrow or lymphatic tissues. They are considered to be related cancers because they involve the uncontrolled growth of cells with similar functions and origins.

Hodgkin lymphoma is a specialized form of lymphoma and will represent about 11.5 percent of all lymphomas diagnosed in 2005. Hodgkin lymphoma has characteristics that distinguish it from all other cancers of the lymphatic system, including the presence of an abnormal cell called the Reed-Sternberg cell (a large, malignant cell found in Hodgkin lymphoma tissues); incidence rates higher in adolescents and young adults than adults in their middle years; and long-term survival rates of more than 85 percent.

The statistics indicated that 7350 new cases of Hodgkins disease (now referred to as Hodgkins Lymphoma) would be diagnosed in 2005. There are no known causes for Hodgkins but this lymphoma is now considered to be one of the most curable forms of cancer. The site also indicates there are almost 128,000 people living with Hodgkins in the United States, and despite advances in the past 20 years, approximately 1400 deaths from Hodgkins were expected in 2005.

So, over 25 years later, I still remember the conversation of my diagnosis. One phrase my Oncologist used was "if you have to deal with a cancer, this is the one you want". The phrase did not provide much comfort to a 17 year old in shock, but it means a lot today.

Me Versus March Madness

Well, all in all this week went pretty well. I managed 5 workouts consisting of 3 cardio and 2 strength workouts. Unfortunately, I did not make any long bike rides this weekend. Weather here in Southern California was a little cold and rainy on Saturday, and college basketball garnered my attention on Sunday.

It is that time of the year, March Madness. My alma mater did make this year's tournament, but only time will tell which team actually shows up to play. Either way, I'm sure March will be a challenging training month. Between wanting to watch the games, and of course the snacking that comes along with watching, will bring havoc to both my training and my weight loss goal. Already, the weight is back up to 193, which I hope is mostly just a minor fluctuation and not a trend. But, again, only time will tell that story as well.

Fund raising is still going well, and my continued thanks go out to all those who have contributed. I won't let you down. I may be slow, but I won't give up! Now, where did I put that remote......

It's All Up Hill from Here!

This shot was taken with my camera phone on today's ride. This is my 2 miles to go mark. It doesn't matter what route I decide to ride, I'm always greeted by the 2 mile up hill climb to my driveway. It gains 500 feet during the two miles, and while there are other entrance paths, they are steeper! There is the saying that what does not kill you, makes you stronger and I hope that is true. Unfortunately, that hill doesn't seem to be getting any easier!

All in all, this has been a good week, and I am using it as my unofficial kickoff for training and donation gathering. I thank everyone who has been so generous in this first week. I managed to get 4 morning workouts in this week, and the one 30 mile bike ride Sunday afternoon. So, not too bad of a beginning.

I am still contemplating what my time goal for the century will be. I'm reluctant to commit just yet as I am still in the dark about the ride's route. Too many hills could make for a very, very long day. However, I do have a goal to lose 16 lbs by the ride date. Right now, I am at 191, so getting to 174 lbs should make climbing hills a little easier (at least I certainly hope so).

Thanks again for your support!

Livestrong Web site problems

Well, unfortunately, the LiveStrong web site seems to have some naming issues. They have issued a new address, although I do not know at this time if it is temporary or permanent. None the less, we'll keep peddling! Check back early next week for a training update!

A Blog Begins

Yesterday marked the kickoff of my fundraising for the Lance Armstrong Foundation as I sent out my first round of emails announcing my participation in the Southern California edition of the LIVESTRONG ride. I have created this blog as a means to share my training efforts, and hopefully, my progress. Along the way I will also try to highlight aspects of the foundation as well as post any interesting statistics or news regarding cancer research and treatment.
